January series: 5 Ways to Declutter your space

We all know the saying, messy bed messy head. Nothing can make you feel more like a hot mess than when your home/flat/room is a mess. Everyone’s life has become more and more busy recently, and yes organising and tidying is the last thing you want to do when you have the January blues, but now is the time to get your life together.

Start small.

Your brain likes to break things into chunks, otherwise it gets overwhelmed and that’s when you somehow end up slumped on the sofa watching re-runs of Pretty Little Liars (I see you girl). So start room by room, section by section. This will also help you to feel more accomplished, remember this isn’t a quick *chuck everything under the bed and no one will notice* so really gut out all areas, including the dreaded junk draw!

Attack your wardrobe first

Who knows what lies beneath that pile at the back of your wardrobe. A fluroscent pink tutu? Your green prom dress you still can’t believe you actually wore? Get it out, get it alll out and chuck away anything that doesn’t make you feel good,  and ahem, doesn’t fit you anymore. For an extra feel good factor send a few bags of clothes to charity shops, remember one womans trash is another womans treasure! And for some extra cash sell some on depop.

Clothing rule: If you haven’t worn an item in 6 months, sell or donate it.

Be realistic about what you actually need

Lets be real, even Carrie Bradshaw doesn’t need 17 pairs of the same coloured shoes, or those jeans you haven’t fit into since you were 18. And if you are anything like me, I bet you rarely even wear half of your wardrobe.  In terms of your house, start by de-cluttering all of your cupboards first and organising things into piles. As Marie Kondo says:

“The best way to choose what to keep and what to throw away is to take each item in one’s hand and ask: “Does this spark joy?” If it does, keep it. If not, dispose of it. This is not only the simplest but also the most accurate yardstick by which to judge.”

Find a Home for things

We are all guilty of it, dumping your purse and keys on a dresser, or piling up that chair in the corner that’s sole purpose is for your 7 fluffy jumpers hats and gloves. Or storing a hundred unnecessary cooking gadgets on the counter. But this quickly adds to to an overall effect of disorganization throughout the home.

So make sure to create a space for each item in your home/room/flat – and when you’ve finished using it put it back in it’s ‘home’ sounds simple but this trick is a life changer.

The first step in crafting the life you want is to get rid of everything you don’t.
