Seven ways to declutter your mind and free up your mental space

  1. Eliminate stress in your day. Create a morning routine that works for you.  Use your mornings for yourself with little distractions, get up earlier and do something that starts your day in a positive way, like working out or writing in gratitude journal. I wrote more about this here.

Benefit: More peace and calm throughout your day.

      2. Say ‘yes’ less. Over extending yourself complicates your life. Learn to tell others no when you don’t want to do something.  You don’t owe anyone a reason or an excuse. Remember you literally only live once, time is the most expensive currency. So don’t exchange it doing things you don’t want to.

Benefit: Increased self-esteem, self-respect and more time to do what you love.

     3. Give less time to social media. Life is difficult enough without unnecessary negativity. Go on a media fast, say to yourself you will have atleast 2 hours a day when you do not check social media. I know you don’t really NEED to refresh your Instagram and twitter timeline every 10 minutes… but I also know we are guilty of it!

Benefit: You’ll stop comparing your life to someone else’s filtered reality, so you can spend more time living in the present, feeling calm and peaceful.

      4.Want less. Instead of wanting more material things, express gratitude for what you already have and importantly what is free, your best friend, your family, nature, a library.

Benefit: The ability to recognize you have everything you need without spending unnecessary money.

      5. Meditate -Meditation reduces stress and anxiety and helps to free up mental space. Even 5 – 10 minutes in your day can make a significant difference to decluttering your mind.

     6. Reduce your commitments.  Take a look at each area of your life and write down all of your commitments.  Look at each one and decide whether it really brings you happiness or adds value to your life, and if it is worth the amount of time that you invest in it.  Learn how to say no and decline offers.

Benefit: By eliminating the things that don’t bring you value or happiness you make space for things that do.

      7. Reconsider your routines. Write down all of your weekly and daily obligations, chores, and tasks, and then plan out daily and weekly routines.  Hang it up where you can see it and try to follow it.  You might find that having a routine brings a new sense of calm and order to your life.

Your homework: Current Me vs. Future Me exercise: Draw or create a list of what your life looks like now and what isn’t currently working in your life. Next, draw or write a list of how you want your life to look like, and then determine the actions you can take to change your circumstances and begin.

    As soon as I saw this blog post title on my Bloglovin feed I knew I had to read it! I think Step 3 and 4 are the ones I really want to try! They both go hand in hand, and to be honest I think they’re largely responsible for the stress we all feel in the modern age!

    This really struck a chord with me. You’re so right! I need to start saying no more, without feeling like I need to come up with an explanation or justify my decision. It’s MY life and if I don’t want to do something, that is my right. I also love the idea of creating a list of my current situation and one with all the things I want my life to be to then figure out a way to get myself from here to there, and I’m definitely going to give it a try.

      Yes it’s a long journey creating boundaries for yourself and not feel ‘guilty’ but its so so important! I also absolutely love the current me vs current me exercise as it really gives you something to work towards no matter where you are in your life!       I tend to use the head space app! It’s so helpful and it’s only ten minutes a day!

    I’m realizing the importance of decluttering my mind and freeing up mental space regularly to be more effective at work and enjoy the time I spend outside work (ex. not think about work when I’m not at the office) so I’ll definitely apply these tips and hope things change a bit in coming months.
